We Celebrate With Mosley Scholarship Recipients
Tuesday, November 17, 2015 was a very big day for 5 Mosley students as they signed scholarships with the colleges of their choice. First Choice Physical Therapy and MVP Sports Enhancement are so proud of their achievements. It was so impressive how each athlete thanked God and their parents for their success. They also thanked First Choice and MVP for helping them achieve their college dreams. We would love the opportunity to help others achieve their college dreams. Write Your Own Script
In Florida and 47 other states you do not have to have a script from your primary physician to see a Doctor of Physical Therapy. That is the point of this ad we ran in the Lynn Haven Ledger in March of 2015. This is one of a string of ads that we designed in-house.
That was the beginning of our series of ads with full color backgrounds and busier than most of the ads you saw in the Ledger. Ok, we admit they were the busiest ads. They looked good in the large newspaper format though and we decided to put together a few ads of that style. We hope you liked them for their difference!
Regardless of the style of the ad, our main thought was always to make sure that we educated the reader that they have the final say in where they go for physical therapy. That is why we include the tag of “It’s Your Choice – Make It Count” in most of our ads.
MVP Sports Enhancement Trains With Mosley
A report on Channel 7 News shows Coach Mask talking about the upcoming volleyball season and our own MVP Sports Enhancement’s role in their preparation this summer.
LYNN HAVEN As the prep football season gets going, so too does the high school volleyball season.
Many area teams in fact are in Tallahassee for a preseason classic this weekend. Arnold and Mosley among them.
We paid a visit to one of the latter’s practices this week as head coach Michelle Mask and her group look ahead to what they hope will be another big season.
The Lady Dolphins, who finished 21-9 last season, were district runner up to Arnold, then came back and beat Arnold in round two of the playoffs. Mosley then made it all the way to the region finals, losing to powerhouse Bishop Kenny in Jacksonville.
One reason to believe they can repeat, or even build on that success, the return of T’ara Ceasar, who spent last season with Rutherford, after playing with Mosley as a freshman.
They also return key starters like Kiana Yangson and Kenley Adams.
“Well we knew we were going to have to have a tough summer working out,” said Mask. “And we kind of knew going into the summer that we were gonna work as hard we could all summer to prepare for the fall. And the girls started hard in July. We went to Auburn, we went to U.F., we went two-a-days pretty much all summer. Oh my gosh we went as far as hiring personal trainers. And it’s the first time we’ve ever done it, we had MVP Sports Performance come out here and three times a week he’d come out and he’d do training with the girls, so I think it’s gonna show.”
The season begins for real for Mosley and other area teams next week. The Lady ‘Fins host Catholic in their opener Tuesday at 6.
Free School Physicals, Big Success!
We love it when a plan comes together. We love it even more when the community supports the plan.
Kids that participate in sports in the Bay County school system must have a physical each year both they can join in. For the 3rd year First Choice Physical Therapy hosted a morning of free school athlete physicals for the students. It is a team effort that extends beyond the staff at FCPT though. We send out a big “Thank You” to everyone involved. Doctors from around the county volunteered to do the main exam and many FCPT staff making sure that students had filled out their forms before getting in line to have their physical and manning several stations set up to check weight, height, eyes and more. It ran like a well oiled machine and you would think we do this everyday.
While this was open to all Bay County students Bay Haven and Bay Haven North were the largest group taking advantage of the offer. It is a testament to the communication system in place between the school, the students and the parents. They really no how to get the word out!
If you missed it this year you can go ahead and put it on your calendar to start watching for us to announce the date next year. We like to target the last weekend of July or very close to it. Follow us on Facebook or visit our web site to find the exact date when it is announced.
Swimmer’s Shoulder
As the dog days of summer are upon us, many of you are finding relief and a way to beat the heat in the joys of swimming. Whether you are a novice swimmer that enjoys time in the water, or an elite swimmer that swims for a local swim team or training for your next Triathlon, you most likely have experienced some sort of shoulder pain. Research shows that 94% of elite swimmers experience some sort of shoulder pain or “Swimmer’s Shoulder.” I have recently teamed up with a local NCAA competitive swimmer to take a look into the world of swimming and the injuries that come along with the demands of the sport. Attached to this blog is a link to a research paper that goes into great detail the biomechanical dysfunctions that produce shoulder pain and how to prevent such injuries. If you or your loved ones are having any shoulder pain that may be related to “Swimmer’s Shoulder” come in and see one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy for a complete evaluation and plan of care to get you back into the water pain free.

Whether you were able to take advantage of this program this year or if you will be joining us for the first time next year, put it on your calendar now! This offer was made possible through the combined efforts and help from the following:
It’s just a little tendonitis…Right?
A common phrase that people use to describe their pain or injury is, “Oh it’s just a little tendonitis, it will go away soon.” Chronic tendonitis without treatment could ultimately lead to a complete rupture of the tendon sidelining you from any activity for months. In the past 10 years there has been substantial research into tendon pathology and the term “tendinopathy” has replaced the old term “tendonitis” as a result of the research and we now have a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms. Through study and research, it has been concluded that there are 3 stages to tendinopathy: 1) reactive tendinopathy 2) tendon dysrepair and 3) degenerative tendinopathy.
Reactive tendinopathy is the early stage of tendon dysfunction and is a short-term adaptive thickening in attempt to reduce the stress placed upon the tendon. In this stage, the tendon can revert back to normal structure if overload is reduced or sufficient time is given between loading. Tendon dysrepair, there is greater matrix (tissue composition) breakdown of the tendon. We see this in all ages of patients and activity levels. In this stage, the tendon appears thickened with more localized changes. Degenerative tendinopathy is the last and most dangerous stage of tendon dysfunction. There is greater matrix and cell breakdown, with even some areas of cell death in this particular stage. If gone unchecked, this stage can inevitably lead to rupture.
Due to the fact that tendonitis/tendinopathy is an overuse injury, the best course of action is to decrease the stress and overloading of the tendon. In other words, REST. Also, through specific treatment interventions including soft tissue mobilization, eccentric strengthening, and evaluating the ultimate cause of the tendon dysfunction, we can prevent any further damage done to the tendon. If you are experiencing any sort of joint pain or “tendonitis” pain, come in and see one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy for a thorough evaluation to determine the best course of treatment for your particular injury.

Tennis elbow anyone?
Tennis elbow is a common catchall phrase for inflammatory disorders of the elbow. However, most of the time it doesn’t have anything to do with playing tennis. Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is an overuse/strain disorder caused by repetitive contraction of the muscles of the forearm and wrist. In addition to racquet sports, activities such as painting, using a screwdriver or a knife for food preparation can all cause inflammation and pain in the elbow. Conservative treatment would begin with resting the upper extremity, using ice on the affected area and over the counter NSAIds (Advil, Aleve). There are cases where chronic imflammation of the elbow can lead to adhesions or scar tissue to form around the joint which can result in nagging pain or even disability. If this is a condition you may be dealing with that hasn’t responded to conservative treatments, come see us at First Choice Physical Therapy where our therapists can design a treatment program to get you felling better soon.

The importance of running shoes…
Published June 17, 2015 |
With running as a hobby you do not need much equipment and do not need to spend a lot of money, but it is important to get a good running shoe. To determine what type of shoe you need, you will need to know the characteristics of your running gait. For example, when I run, I slightly pronate so I need a shoe with medial support. Check with us at First Choice about what kind of running gait you have so that you can lace up and get on the road.

“What A Pain in The Neck”
Have you ever suffered from constant headaches that start in the back of your neck and end up feeling like the pain is right behind your eye? What about after a long day at work, do you ever have a dull headache that will not go away until you lay down and try to “relax” with little to no relief? This type of headache is referred to as a “tension headache” and originates in the deep muscles of your neck that attach at the bottom of your head and can result in intense headaches. Due to poor posture, along with myofascial restrictions and cervical immobility, tension headaches are very difficult to relieve with home remedies. If you are suffering from headaches and want to do something about them, come in for an evaluation by one of our Doctors of Physical Therapy to decrease your pain and get rid of that headache once and for all.
